Football, Hockey, Basketball – all the athletic sports have for years and years been seen as a unified culture, a unrivaled religion where skin-color, ethnicity and even the pigment of your eyes never determined the ins and outs of the beautiful games. Never in our modern-day history have major sports institutions been driven by racist minds, at least openly, – guess that makes Donald Sterling the first then.
This racist slumlord, as a NBA reporter puts it, actually had the balls to stir controversy and introduce racial debate to the NBA , one of the most multi-cultural sports league on the planet, by stating that he didn’t want his “multi-cultured” girlfriend to associate herself with black people or bringing them to the games. I mean what kind of an idiot would state something as ridiculous as that knowing that the majority of all the remarkable NBA players are, in fact, African American? Not only is this “comment” undeniably foolish but sickening as it offends every aspect and every prospect of todays’ modern multidimensional athletic world. But not to worry, he sure got what he deserved as, Adam Silver, the new NBA commissioner, banned Sterling for life of associating himself, in any way, with the NBA as well banning him from any kind of association with the LA Clipper. This includes the disassociation with any NBA games and practices. But Silver didn’t stop there as he toped it all of with a 2.5 million dollar fine as well, urging the board of governors to find another replacement for the owner of the LA Clippers.
As crazy as this might sound, Oprah Winfrey and even Floyd Mayweather have been the talk of the hour as they are perceived to be the hottest replacement options, according to ESPN.
But there is so much to learn from this “mistake”, so much to evaluate. Considering that you own one of the most powerful basketball teams on the planet, in the largest league in the world, with a net-worth of 1.9 billion dollars, you would think keeping a sensible and respectful dialog would be common sense. I mean I hate to quote Spiderman here but “with great power comes great responsibility” – and Sterling just flushed that responsibility down the drain together with everything else he had.
This historical event right here, this action that was demonstrated by the “great” Donald Sterling shows how careful you really have to be, how you always have to be on your toes in order to make it out alive. It shows how you really can lose everything in the blink of an eye, and therefore we should always remember that it takes 40 years to build a reputation and 4 second to ruin it.
