Emma Watson, the woman who made our childhood a lot more enjoyable with her role in Harry Potter movies, comes again to make an amazing impression with her stances on Feminism and gender equality. In a genuine and impactful speech at the UN, Emma talked about Feminism in a way everyone can understand. It’s not boys against girls, it’s not women becoming more male-like, it’s not female supremacy, it’s simply equal treatment and equal opportunity.
Men, I would like to give this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society. I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man. In fact, in the UK, suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20 to 49, eclipsing road accidents, cancer and heart disease. I’ve seen men fragile and insecure by what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either.
A lot of guys are pushed away by the word “Feminism” because we suddenly picture women taking over and guys being stripped off their balls, but truth is, we’re all concerned, and we’re all supposed to join in the cause for gender equality.
“It’s not the word that is important, it’s the idea”
