Why You Should Follow Your Intuition

Maybe you didn´t know that the subconscious part of your brain is 30,000 times more powerful than the conscious one. To begin, let’s briefly review  how the brain works. The brain can be divided into 3 parts: the reptilian brain, the limbic brain and the cortex brain.

First things first. The reptilian brain is the part of the brain responsible for our survival. It is the part of the brain that makes us fall asleep when our body needs sleep. It is the part responsible of making us breathe without think about it, of that our heart beats, that our liver function correctly, etc… In other words, is the responsible of all those functions that we do not take care of in a conscious way. It could be said that the reptilian brain’s main mission is to make us stay alive as long as possible.

Second, is the limbic brain, probably the more complex part and the part of our brain that is responsible for the success and failures in life. I will explain this later. But first you have to know that the limbic brain is the brain that governs our emotions. It’s the one (although we don´t get to know it) that makes us to take the left path instead of the right one when we arrived at a crossroads, that makes us to take some important decisions simply because we “get a good feeling about it” or because “our intuition told us”. It is the part of the brain responsible of our attitudes, our way of being and facing life. Our happiness or depression, our optimism or pessimism.

Finally we find the cortex brain. As its name suggests, this is the part made by the cerebral cortex, and is responsible for conscious thought. That is, is responsible for holding in memories, facts, dates and pure knowledge. It is our best ally in the final exams and helps us to succeed in school and college. We spend our childhood and youth developing this part of the brain and we always try to solve problems analytically, analyzing the pros and cons of each situation, and trying to find the best answer for everything. And that’s a mistake.

Once you know all this, you should also know that we learn 95% of the things in the first 3 years of life. 98% of the things through age 12. And from the age of 12, 25,000 neurons die daily. So, sadly, you´ll learn fewer things.

All this information is great, but do we know what it’s all about? It’s easy. As I said before, the limbic brain is the one that makes people succeed or fail in life. This brain is in charge of our attitudes. Cultivating and developing attitudes is the key to success in anything. You can be a genius in mathematics, finance, physics or whatever, but if people don´t like you, if you cant deal with others, if you are afraid of challenges, if you avoid any adversity, if you focus only on the negative… you will fail in almost everything you do.

Intuition is the part that we cant control and that tells us exactly what is going to happen next. It is the voice in our head that tells us when we have to sell or buy our stock, that tells us when we are in front of a good deal, or when we are with the person we want to spend the rest of our lives with.

It is impossible to analyze in detail all situations. Life is unpredictable and anything can happen. So stop thinking and trying to measure all things, because it is impossible to always hit. Just let things happen, listen to your instinct. That phrase is true: listen to your heart, not to your head (although it would be more correct to say listen to your limbic brain, not to your cortex brain).

As Steve Jobs said: “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary”.
