As part of its ongoing guest speaker lecture series, Capital Club, Dubai’s Premier Private City Club and member of the ENSHAA group of companies, will welcome former UK Defence Secretary, Dr Liam Fox MP, on 31 March from 7-9pm, to give a talk entitled “Should Britain leave the EU?”
To be held in Capital Club’s Al Hamra Room and moderated by Gulf News’ Editor-at-Large, Francis Matthew, the Right Honourable Member (MP) for North Somerset will present his case in favour of the UK leaving the European Union – an issue that will be settled by a nationwide referendum on 23 June.
Britain’s potential exit from the EU, sometimes labelled “Br-exit” by the UK media, is a deeply divisive topic at this time. It has disrupted and divided opinions across all sectors of society, commerce and industry in the UK.
If the British electorate does vote to leave, this is likely to be understood as a “vote of no confidence” in the current Prime Minister, David Cameron – a strong campaigner to stay in the EU.
If the UK PM does lose the referendum, a leadership contest within the governing Conservative Parliamentary Party is widely expected. The winner, of course, will effectively become the next UK Prime Minister. Dr Fox is predicted to enter as a candidate in this leadership election, should this become the case.
Key topics for discussion at the Capital Club talk will include issues concerning how the EU referendum will affect European expats, whether the UK’s exit would be good for its relations with the UAE, and whether the exit would damage trade and the EU overall.
Capital Club boasts members including UAE government officials and some of the most senior executives from the country’s private sector industries. Therefore, many Club Members are expected to attend the talk on 31 March, in order to hear Dr Fox’s opinion on how changes to Britain’s relationship with the EU will affect trade, security, commerce and its subsequent relationship – if outside of the EU – with the wider world.
Dr Fox holds a doctorate in medicine from Glasgow University, UK, and became a British Member of Parliament (MP) in 1992, after first serving as a GP and Civilian Army Medical Officer. He has held many senior cabinet positions including, most recently, Secretary of State for Defence (in government and in opposition), and Shadow Foreign Secretary.
Tickets for the event are AED75 for Members and AED100 for guests. These can be obtained online at www.capitalclubdubai.com or directly from the venue itself.
