If Dubai is a household name today all around the world, it’s no luck. The meteoric rise of the emirate as a hub for innovation, finance, culture and tourism is in large due to the work of a man who many see as a father figure: HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. As the ruler of Dubai, and vice president of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed oversaw the building of the modern Dubai, including global icons such as the world’s tallest building “Burj Khalifa”, the world’s biggest mall “Dubai Mall”, and the world’s busiest international airport “Dubai International Airport” among others.
Sheikh Mohammed is a leader unlike any others. Down to earth, bold, visionary and caring, he mingles with people in cafés and restaurants, holds public meetings where anyone can come and voice their ideas and concerns (Majlis), and always is a step ahead when strategizing for the emirate’s future. His active work to promote Dubai as a world global hub came with amazing results, the most iconic being the decision to award Dubai the privilege to host the Expo 2020.
But beyond Dubai Expo and Burj Khalifa, Sheikh Mohammed has shaped Dubai from early on, starting with the smallest planning details to the ambitious 10 and 20 years long plans for the city. If leadership was to ever be personified, it would look like Sheikh Mohammed no doubt!
