You know someone is a badass when he goes from growing up in a poor african american family to becoming a star NBA player and a business tycoon worth $500 Million. Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the legend who fought HIV and excelled in all aspects of life, is no stranger to glory. It all started with loving Basketball and practicing hard to become the best he can be on the pitch: whether it is waking up an hour before school to practice, or throwing ball at 3 am when the park was free, Magic knew that practice makes perfect and so fought tooth and nail to grow and perfect his talent. It all paid off in high school and college where he became the guy everyone was watching on the pitch, ultimately leading him to be selected first overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Lakers.
Fast forward, Magic already won several championships with the Lakers, MVP and all star MVP title, and retired in 1991 after being diagnosed with HIV. End of a journey one might think? Hell no! Magic went on to focus on Business, investing his money and time in Urban America where he realised that even a neighbourhood riddled with gang violence can be a great investment opportunity. Magic always knew that African American communities have the potential to prosper, so long as there were people and businessmen willing to open up shop and invest in these areas that had more consumer potential than Miami or New York. Quite a bet, but one that paid off over and over, making Magic hundreds of millions along the way. Not only did Earvin Johnson do well on his ROI, he also did good by the people who trusted him and his fellow African American who needed someone to uplift them.
Today Magic continues to kickass through Magic Johnson Enterprises and his philanthropic arm, investing in urban communities and uplifting thousands through economic and educational opportunities. If there were ever a personification of benevolent capitalism, then it sure will look like Magic!
