If you grab a taxi in Mozambique or Nepal and ask the driver who the US president is, or who won the civil war in the United States, chances are they will answer correctly. US politics is nothing foreign to most people outside of the US because in one way or another people have been affected by Washington even in the most remote areas in Yemen or Afghanistan. But while people outside of the US know much about US history and politics, American college students fail to answer the most trivial questions about their homeland.
Who is the US Vice President? No idea! Who won the civil war? The South!
Texas Tech students are an example of how the most powerful political institutions in the world are left to rule over a group of people who have no slight interest in knowing about their own establishment and let alone holding them accountable. Low voting turnout, lack of knowledge about politics and disinterest from political engagement, these are some aspects explaining why we wind up with Congressmen, Senators and other officials doing all sorts of crazy things, from passing unpopular laws to launching military operations in places not even US college students can locate on the map.
If you ask them about who is Brad Pitt’s wife or when was Kim Kardashian’s sex video released, you’ll be sure to hear them screaming the answer, and if you are as foolish as to ask “Is the US the greatest nation on earth”, they’ll all join in unison “Fuck Yeah”.
If only they could see this video
