Sharjah Bridal Fair Launches “Young Fashion Awards 2016” for Up-and-coming Female Designers in the UAE

The Sharjah Bridal Fair (SBF) has launched the “Young Fashion Awards 2016”, which will be held at Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre (JRCC) from 19 to 22 May 2016. The awards, which are open to female Emiratis or UAE residents under 25 years of age, aim to recognise young designers’ inventiveness in the categories of Emerging Fashion Designer (Women’s Ready-to-Wear), Wedding Abayas, and Kaftans or Dresses Collection. In addition to the fashion awards, male and female UAE residents of all nationalities can take part in the “Best Prototype Wedding App or Website” competition.

The judging panel for the “Young Fashion Awards 2016”, to be announced this month, will consist of independent fashion industry professionals who will look for originality, creativity, functionality, strong aesthetics, commercial viability, and harmony among the collection’s pieces. A fashion show of shortlisted applicants’ designs will be held on 21 May, and the awards ceremony will be held on 22 May, during which winners of each category will be granted various special prizes.

Speaking on the awards, Hanan Al Mahmoud, Director of JRCC, said, “SBF 2016, the first bridal exhibition organised by JRCC, specialises in providing all the necessary support services for organising attractive and innovative wedding parties. We have launched the ‘Young Fashion Awards 2016’ to encourage and motivate young talents and give them the opportunity to showcase their unique designs.”

Each category has its own list of criteria for those who want to throw their hat in the ring: in the Emerging Fashion Designer (Women’s Ready-to-Wear Collection) category, the fashion label must be relatively new and have sold at least two women’s ready-to-wear collections; participants must be female Emiratis under 25 years of age; participants must submit and present at least six pieces from their new or latest women’s ready-to-wear collection; and their application must be submitted directly to JRCC.

The Best Wedding Abaya category is open to all current fashion design students as well as fresh graduates who completed their degree course in 2015 or 2016; participants must be female Emiratis under 25 years of age; participants must submit and present one wedding abaya design; entries must be lavish and clearly distinguished as an evening dress or abaya (a sheila or headpiece is required to complete the look); and participating students must apply through their university/college/institute, while graduates can apply directly to JRCC.

Lastly, the Best Evening Kaftans or Dresses Collection category is open to female Emirati or UAE resident designers under 25 years of age; participants must submit and present at least six pieces of kaftans or dresses from their new or latest collection; entries must be elegantly-embellished and wearable at parties and weddings (evening wear); and applications must be submitted directly to JRCC.

Those applying for the “Best Prototype Wedding App or Website” award must present a fully-interactive, user-friendly, and close to final product one-stop app or website dedicated to A to Z wedding planning, such as venues, florists, planners, dresses, videographers, photographers, caterers, bands, jewellery and accessories, hair and makeup, and more.

Developers applying for the “Best Prototype Wedding App or Website” award will be judged on their prototype’s originality and functionality, as well as its usefulness, effectiveness and compatibility to users. Hopeful applicants must complete all the requirements listed on the online application form found on  www.shjbridalfair.com and submit it via email to maitha.h@jrcc.ae by April 30.

Applicants for the “Young Fashion Award 2016” need to submit one profile photo of themselves, and three high resolution photos of each design entry from different angles (front, back and side view) or a full look-book in PDF format. JRCC officials require that all entries be entirely original as copied designs will be disqualified from the competition.
