Survival of the Fittest: Why and How you Have to Fight Your Way to the Top

“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward”

If you are wondering, the answer is yes. I just did quote Rocky Balboa, however it is not like any other cheesy quote you cheaply copy paste as your Facebook status, there is a message behind it: life is full of obstacles and the only way we are able to cope with them is if we know how to face them. There is always going to be someone smarter than you or better than you, but unless you don’t use your full potential into preparing for what’s coming to you, your “superior” characteristics are useless. We´ve all heard the story about the turtle and the rabbit! Now there might not be a magical recipe to success, but there are pointers and basic ground rules you have to follow and execute to stand out and beat your opponents no matter what. All right, here are the basics.

Trusting yourself

Let me ask you something, if you don’t believe and trust in yourself, who the hell will? Confidence and self-reliance are two very essential characteristics you have to have for people to rely on you and feel comfortable around you when it comes to stepping up to the plate. Everybody can talk the talk, but the question is, can they walk the walk?

Staying positive

Now I’m not talking about being happy all the damn time, sometimes you’ll need to show some anger and some negativity just to get it out of your system. With that being said, you’ll face a whole bunch of situations, both in your life and career that get you down because they didn’t turn out as you expected. By keeping that positivity up, you’ll counter the discouragements and the haters, which will help you keep going to achieve your goal. We are only able to connect the dots looking backwards. So as long as you keep an optimistic attitude and look at the situations through a “glass half full”, you’ll end up succeeding.

Acknowledge your weaknesses

Nobody is perfect, and even though it is important to know your strengths, it’s even more important to know your weaknesses, i.e where you suck. Knowing your limitations and flaws will allow you to put that extra effort into improving them. Remember that weaknesses are undeveloped strengths. So put in those extra hours to excel and stand out from the crowd.

The importance of saying No

Don’t try to be an overachiever; I get that sometimes we try to do a lot in order to impress the people around us, but my advice: forget about that. The people who matter won’t care, and the people who care don’t matter. Success doesn’t come flying towards you within a couple of days; it takes time! So cut down on the workload and perfect fewer tasks than trying to do a great amount of mediocre tasks. Remember, Done is better than Perfect.

Leave your comfort zone

You’ll never know who you´ll be working with. Hence if you have any stereotypes, judgments or preconceived ideas of a culture, it’s time to drop them and move on. Great enterprises and corporations are looking to be more diverse and hire those who can cope and excel in environments with different backgrounds and cultures. Burst out of your bubble and embrace the changing world we live in today to be able to expand your opportunities and open more doors.

Don’t think outside the box; tear it up

We live in an innovative world where technology and spectacular ideas are bursting through the roof and are shaping the environment we love so very much. I mean what would you do without your iPhone? Exactly! The students who failed their exams in high school are just as likely to come up with the next billion dollar idea as the students who got straight As. Creativity and imagination is just as important, if not more, than your test scores. Steve Jobs said it best ““Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do”. Be a crazy one and come up with the next big thing.

You’re born an original, don’t die a copy

We´ve probably seen this quote all over Facebook and Instagram, but as much as it sounds cliché, it’s still the truth! Around every corner you’ll see people who are constantly adapting and changing to fit in with the “group” and impress others. Let me tell you something, those who swim against the stream and don’t change, are the ones who stand out and make a difference. Don’t ever change your values or principles for someone else, because people will start liking your for who you think you are instead of who you really are, and usually when that happens, disaster is around the corner!

Now I’m no guru, but I’ve put these pointers into practice together with hundreds of successful individuals who are living the life they want to live because of their persistence, originality and awareness. You got nothing to lose, give them a shot, they just might work out.
