It sounds crazy, but it’s true! Tech giants Facebook and Apple are now willing to pay their female employees almost $20,000 to cover the cost of freezing their eggs – talk about a whole new level of dedication. The whole goal behind this, what some people would call absurd thing, is to enable women to continue focusing on their careers without giving up their chances to have children later on in their lives.
According NBC News, Facebook recently began this program and has Apple right behind them, also starting this in January 2015. Now for the people who are wondering “what the hell freezing one’s eggs is all about” – it’s known as oocyte cryopreservation, basically egg freezing, a process that a lot of women decide to go through. So what you do is that you extract and store your eggs, allowing a woman to reinsert them at a later age, allowing her to have children at a time when she might otherwise be infertile.
It may sound dangerous, and slightly extreme, but due to scientific advancements, the process has been significantly successful in recent years. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, one third of all couples where the woman is over 35 years of age, have fertility difficulties, therefore freezing one’s eggs is highly advantageous. Also, the time in which women approach their declining fertility is perceived as their prime work years, and many dedicated professional women consider the safe process as hitting the “pause” button on their desire to build a family.
Now considering that Silicon Valley has been lacking women in real power positions, offering them this procedure could definitely help lure top female talents across the globe.
