Career and Professional Life

Migos Formation

Takeoff began his music career as a member of Migos. In 2009, Takeoff, Quavo, and Offset formed the group Migos. They started as the Polo Club but soon changed their name to Migos, which better suited their identity and background. Their unique style, known for fast-paced raps and catchy hooks, gained attention in the local music scene.

Their mixtape “Juug Season” was released on August 25, 2011, and “No Label” was released on June 1, 2012, marking the beginning of their musical adventure. Following the release of their song “Versace” in 2013, which Drake famously remixed, Migos rose to fame. “Yung Rich Nation,” their debut studio album, was made available in July 2015.

The band’s breakthrough came with the hit song “Bad and Boujee” in 2016, even though Takeoff wasn’t given credit for the tune. Their album “Culture” landed at the top of the Billboard 200 the following year. With the release of “The Last Rocket,” Takeoff’s solo effort in 2018, Migos’ fourth album, “Culture III,” in 2021. On the other hand, tales of personal conflicts have given rise to rumors of Migos disbanding by October 2022. Shortly before Quavo passed away, Takeoff and Quavo worked together on a joint album titled “Only Built for Infinity Links,” which was released in the same month.

“Yung Rich Nation,” Migos’ first studio album, was released in 2015. Accompanied by cameos from Chris Brown and Young Thug, the album peaked at #3 on the Top Rap Albums chart and gave rise to the successful single “One Time.” Finally, on the Billboard 200, it peaked at position 17. “Back to the Bando,” a new mixtape by Migos, was released in September of 2015. The dance move “dabbing” was made popular throughout the world by its debut song, “Look at My Dab,” which brought it international notoriety.

In 2016, Migos achieved their first number-one success with “Bad and Boujee,” a collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert. The song was the lead single taken from their second album, “Culture.” The RIAA went on to certify the song four times platinum. But because he was preoccupied with recording the song, Takeoff was neither mentioned nor given credit for it. When “Culture” was finally published in January 2017, it moved almost 131,000 album-equivalent units in its 1st week and opened at #1 on the Billboard 200. It became platinum that same July.

The lead single from their third studio album, “Culture II,” Migos released “MotorSport” at the end of 2017. The song, which features rappers Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, was featured on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number six. “Stir Fry,” a second single, reached its peak at position eight. In January 2018, “Culture II” was widely received and became the second album by Migos to peak at number one on the Billboard 200.

Controversies

Takeoff was hardly an anomaly among rappers who have had legal troubles with the government, given his rise to prominence alongside the other two members of Migos. In particular, the Georgia Southern University event has brought the three rappers numerous legal issues.

Migos was scheduled to perform at Georgia Southern University’s spring concert in April 2015. The band, however, encountered difficulties early and didn’t take the stage until over 1 & ½ hours after the original set time. In addition, Migos’ performance fell short of the 45-minute allotted time in the contract, lasting less than half an hour. Law enforcement entered the group’s cars and began investigating when they smelled marijuana. The three of them and the other 12 members of the group were ultimately taken into custody on charges of possessing controlled substances, having a gun in a school zone, and having a gun in possession of a convicted felon—the latter accusation stemming from Offset’s previous criminal history and incarceration.

Takeoff encountered another issue before taking off on a trip from Atlanta to Des Moines, Iowa, in July 2017. He was asked to leave the aircraft after allegedly refusing to move his bag from the ground to the overhead locker. In 2020, a legal action accusing Takeoff of sexual violence, false imprisonment,  assault, and other offenses named him as the offender, sparking more controversy. A woman filed the case, citing Takeoff for these mistreatments at a Los Angeles house party. The LA District Attorney’s office declared in 2021 that it wouldn’t be prosecuting Takeoff for a crime since there was insufficient evidence.
